Individual Volunteer Opportunities

Hubbard House was founded by a group of dedicated volunteers, and you can be a part of that wonderful legacy!

Want to get started right away? The Hubbard House Thrift Store loves your help! Volunteers assist with organizing donations, hanging clothing, and other needs to support this operation. You can email volunteer@hubbardhouse.org or stop in to the Thrift Store (6629 Beach Blvd) and let them know you’re interested in helping out!

There are many other wonderful volunteer opportunities that take a little more preparation:

  • Raise awareness of Hubbard House’s life-saving, life-changing services at community events (lots of Saturday opportunities!)
  • Use your imagination and creativity to develop engaging activities for the children living in shelter, alongside our Children’s Learning Center staff
  • Answer crisis calls to our 24/7 hotline
Advocacy work with survivors in shelter and through our outreach programming
  • Support our Court Advocacy team, Child Protective Investigations team, or other specialized programs

Each volunteer role requires different levels of training and screening, which may include a Level II background screening and 30-hour Advocacy Training.

Group Volunteer Opportunities

Connect with your friends or colleagues while supporting Hubbard House – talk about a win-win!

We have many different opportunities for group volunteers:

  • Cleaning and organizing donation closets
  • Helping at the Hubbard House Thrift Store (weekday and Saturday opportunity!)
  • Hosting activities for program participants
  • Organizing an off-site donation drive or fundraiser
  • Special projects that arise through the year

Location and schedule flexibility are also possible, if your position allows for that.

Internships

Hubbard House offers unpaid internships to undergraduate and graduate students. Interns can work directly with survivors and children in most of our programs, or in the Development Department working with events, marketing, and communications.

If you are interested in interning, please email volunteer@hubbardhouse.org to confirm placements are still available for the semester you’re interested in. Interviews are required for graduate-level internships and Development internships.

Interns are required to attend a volunteer orientation, Level II background screening, and 30-hour training in order to be placed at Hubbard House. Because of these onboarding requirements, please start the process early- we recommend at least a month ahead of your semester- to make sure you can complete everything in time for your internship to begin! You can register to attend a volunteer orientation on our Events page.

With the Shelter open 24/7, there are lots of volunteer opportunities. Some programs are restricted to certain days of the week and times of day.

If you are interested in helping at our Thrift Store or in our different group volunteer or off-site opportunities, then you do not have to attend orientation. You can email volunteer@hubbardhouse.org to get started. All other roles are required to attend a volunteer orientation, to learn more about the different volunteer roles and path forward. You can see upcoming dates and register to attend on our Events page.

No, we will help you! Hubbard House will let you know if your volunteer role requires a background screening. If so, then after your volunteer orientation, we will work with you on setting a background screening. You will be required to pay for the screening.

Absolutely! We always want you to be in the best position possible to help others, and that includes making sure you are trained and comfortable with the volunteer role. Please know that volunteer roles working directly with survivors and children actually have a required 30-hour training to get started. You will learn more about this during your volunteer orientation.
